Sculpture Studio: Sculpting the Torso

with Neil Grant       ADULTS
10 classes, Thursdays, Feb 15-Apr 19

This ten-week class will teach you how to sculpt the torso in clay and is a great introduction to figure sculpting. Instructor Neil Grant uses plaster casts, 3D computer images on the big screen, a live model and a bit of humor (but no anatomy text books) to teach you how to sculpt the torso in a relaxed classroom environment.

“The aim of this class is to demystify sculpting the body and give students a great foundation for going on to produce future figure sculptures,” says Neil. “If you can hold a pen, you have the dexterity to sculpt, and my job becomes giving you the right maps in your head to produce great pieces of art.”
Students will start the class by making a simple torso reference model, then learn how to construct the core of the body in ‘planes’ before moving on to produce a piece from with a live model. You will be able to fire your finished torso in the Center’s kiln after it has dried.

All materials are provided but students are welcome to bring their own tools if they have them.

Neil Grant is an English sculptor who has recently finished a twenty-year corporate career to dedicate himself to his craft. Neil has been sculpting for the past seven years and has studied under nationally recognized sculptors such as Philippe Faraut and Brian Booth Craig. Neil sculpts and teaches on Cape Cod, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. His other passions are rugby, boxing, and Indian food.
“I love sculpture and any other form of art that fuses skill, emotion, and if it can, a bit of humor. In making the transition from the corporate world to an arts career, I’m moving from doing something that put a lot of bread on the table to sawing the table leg off for firewood, but one day I’ll set the world on fire. I absolutely love doing this”.
